WikiMedia, the organization behind Wikipedia (and a number of other free reference sites) and MediaWiki, the software package that powers both the Wikimedia family of websites and The Jargon Wiki, maintain fairly extensive if quite poorly organized help pages. Included with these are the obligatory FAQ pages, which may help answer some of your questions.
